  • More Information

There is a wealth of information available on healthcare, healthcare costs, Medicare, Medicaid, and insurance coverage. Unfortunately, with so much information, it often leads to information overload and an abundance of new questions about what you just learned. In an effort to make this process a little less daunting, Harbor Health Home Care has put together a list of different resources and pertinent information. Feel free to browse through the topics to see if we have the answer you are looking for.

Please note that some links may open new windows to websites that are not affiliated with Harbor Health, such as the actual Medicare website.

    COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

      • Will my insurance or Medicare pay for this?
        • Eligibility for skilled home health care services through Medicare depends on whether...
          • You are homebound (you cannot leave home unassisted - without the aid of someone else or without the use of crutches, a cane, a walker, a wheelchair, or some form of special transportation).
          • Your condition requires at least one of these skilled services:
            • Intermittent nursing care (care requiring the skills of a nurse at least once every 60 days)
            • Physical Therapy
            • Speech Therapy
            • Occupational Therapy
          • The above service(s) are medially necessary and ordered by your doctor.
      • Are there any community programs that might be able to help me pay for this?
        • There are many community programs that are available to help those who need in-home care, but there are generally strict criteria and due to the shortage of funding in government programs, there may be extended waiting periods.
      • My doctor recommended a different agency. Am I allowed to pick my own or change agencies?
        • Just as you have the right to choose a hospital, physician, durable medical equipment company, or pharmacy, you also have the right to choose your own home health care agency.
        • Potential home health care recipients have the right to ask what choices are available, and which agencies service their area.
        • Hospital discharge planners have an obligation to ask patients if they have a preferred home health care agency. Patients have the right to decline the hospitals preferred provider and select the home health care provider of their choice.
        • If patients are not satisfied with their current home health care agency while receiving services, they have the right to change to another agency at any time.
      • What areas do you serve?
        • Harbor Health services all of Macomb and St. Clair Counties, as well as portions of Wayne, Oakland, and Sanilac Counties. If you are unsure as to whether your area is covered, please call our offices at (888) 418-2273.
      • Where can I find more information on Medicare and their plans?
        • You can visit the Medicare website at www.medicare.gov, or you can call them at (800) MEDICARE.
      • How can I decide if I, or a loved one, needs home health care?
        • There are times when you need the care and services provided by a hospital or nursing home, but often times, there’s just no place like home to assist in your recovery. Familiar surroundings and day-to-day activities can increase feelings of well-being and independence. If you are questioning whether or not home health care is the right option for you, please feel free to call our offices Monday-Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm for help making your decisions. We will ask you a few simple questions and provide you with the most complete information as to your options on how to proceed.
      • Am I eligible for Medicare? How do I apply?
        • You are eligible to become a Medicare beneficiary if you meet any of the following conditions:
          • You are 65 or older.
          • You are under age 65 but qualify as disabled.
          • You have end stage renal disease.
